I've been spending most of my afterhours this past week or so at the Vancouver international Film Festival. As usual, I'm sticking with comedy for the most part - serious films can be very iffy propositions in my experience. So far, my luck is holding: only one dud out of eight. Here they are, in my own ranking (though numbers 4 - 7 are more or less equally good).
- Seducing Doctor Lewis Hilarious - the audience was practically screaming with laughter.
- The Bread Maker Romantic comedy. I chose this one partly because of it's setting (St. Jonh's Newfoundland, where I was born) but also because Newfoundlanders usually produce great comedy. I wasn't disappointed.
- That Day A somewhat macabre but very funny comedy - once you realize it is a comedy, that is. Some interesting filming technique that I don't know the name of - out-of-focus backgrounds and more saturated than usual foregrounds - unusual effect, whatever it was.
- The Station Agent Not a lot of plot, but some interesting character interactions.
- The Handcuff King Humour on the Swedish-Finish border.
- Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself Love, lust and comedy in Glasgow.
- With Love, Lylia Light romantic comedy, somewhat zany.
- Noi Albinoi This one has won lots of awards, but I'm not sure why - maybe for its "element of claustrophobia and isolation". A downer - couldn't relate to the protagonist at all, maybe because I never went through much teen angst myself.
Six more films lined up for this coming week, then probably no more until next year's festival.
